A Motive to Endure the Race

1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:1,2

Why did Jesus endure the cross with its pain and shame?  Because of His great love for us, because He knew it was God’s plan of salvation, because He knew He was the only way for man to be reconciled to God.  He is our example. It says we are surrounded by witnesses, those who came before us and remained faithful, as well as those who watch us now, and those who will see the legacy we leave behind.  I asked myself, do I lay aside the weights that can be obstacles to being faithful?  If there is a hard task before me, I can just look at Jesus who gave us faith and will bring it to completion.
