Today I called my daughter, Danielle, to do a video call with her and my 2 grandchildren, Sadie and Ethan. I usually see them a few times a week but I have been away for 11 days so far. They were happy to talk and showed me the pictures they were painting. Danielle told me Ethan keeps saying, ”Grandma held my hand.” She said he is referring to when he had the severe ear infection and had to go to the doctor and get injections 3 days in a row. I took him and hugged him and held his hand as he got the painful shots. I think it is his way of saying he misses me and also his way of remembering me. I was concerned he may think I caused his pain or inflicted it on him since I brought him there. But instead, he remembers me being the one to comfort him and be with him at his side during this difficult time. It made me think that is how God is with us. He does not willing afflict us but suffering is also needed for our growth, conformity to His image, ability to comfort others, healing, obedience, and more. Lamentations 3:32,33 says:
“Though He causes grief, Yet He will show compassion according to the multitude of His mercies. For He does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.”
Suffering is sometimes a necessary thing we need to go through but it is important to know the Lord is with us and comforts us in it.
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’” Isaiah 41:10
